NEW YORK - A former Penn State football assistant coach charged with sexually abusing eight boys in a scandal that has rocked the university said Monday that there was no abuse and that any activities in a campus shower with a boy were just horseplay, not molestation.
In a telephone interview Monday night on NBC News' "Rock Center," Bob Costas asked Jerry Sandusky if he's a pedophile and Sandusky responded, "No."
Sandusky, once considered veteran coach Joe Paterno's heir apparent, was arrested more than a week ago and is charged with sexually abusing eight boys, some on Penn State property, over a 15-year span.
"I am innocent of those charges," the 67-year-old Sandusky said. "... I could say that I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them, and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact."
Asked whether he was sexually attracted to underaged boys, he said "Sexually attracted, no. I enjoy young people, I love to be around them, but, no, I'm not sexually attracted to young boys."
Asked if there was anything he had done wrong, Sandusky said, "I shouldn't have showered with those kids."
The interview with Costas was Sandusky's first public comment on the charges. He had previously maintained his innocence through his attorney, Joe Amendola.
A spokesman for Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly declined to comment on the interview, citing the active investigation.
Sandusky is at the center of a controversy that has rocked not only the Penn State football program, but the school and the state of Pennsylvania. He is charged with 40 counts related to the sexual abuse of young boys and a grand jury report documents alleged incidents of rape as well as inappropriate touching of boys he met through his charity for troubled adolescents, Second Mile.
In an interview that aired on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" program Monday night, Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola, said he believes in his client's innocence and calls him an "overgrown kid."
"He's a jock. For anybody who's ever played sports, you get showers after you work out. ,...but the bottom line is jocks do that, They kid around, they horse around. What Jerry said in regards to the one allegation [to what] the grad student [Mike McQueary] saw, [according to Sandusky,] "We were horsing around, we weren't engaged in sexual activity."
Amendola added: "That's a far different thing...than saying that he committed these other acts, which the prosecution alleged he did. What's going to come out in this case is that Jerry did get showers with kids. What I am being told happened is that Jerry was in the shower with this kid, the kid was messing around, having a good time. He had McQuary come in and see that, he felt uncomfortable, which is exactly what [then-Penn State athletic director Tim] Curley and [then-Penn State senior vice president Gary] Schultz are saying, that it was reported by them by McQueary, that he saw Sandusky in a shower with a kid and he felt uncomfortable."
He also said that Sandusky is "destroyed. People are throwing bricks through his windows at home. I have calls coming in from the police from the township where he lives saying, 'How do we protect him and his wife?' I suggested that they get away for a while but his response was, 'Where do I go? I've been all over the news. No matter where I go, [people] are going to recognize me.' He is distraught, he is absolutely devastated by what's happened to [now-former Penn State coach] Joe Paterno."

The New York Times reported on its website late Monday that close to 10 additional suspected victims have come forward to authorities since Sandusky's arrest, according to people close to the investigation. The paper said police were working to confirm the new allegations.
A spokesman for Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly declined to comment on the interview, citing the active investigation.
Amendola accused the attorney general's office of having "thrown everything they can throw up against the wall." He said some of the allegations, such as putting a hand on a boy's knee, do not constitute criminal conduct and other cases include no direct complaint by the boy.
"They have other people who are saying they saw something, but they don't have actual people saying, `This is what Jerry did to me," Amendola said. "We're working to find those people, and when the time comes, and if we are able to do that, we think this whole case will change dramatically."
Earlier Monday, CBS News investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reported that at least two of Sandusky's alleged victims were believed to be preparing civil lawsuits.
The suits being prepared are against Penn State University and possibly against The Second Mile, the charity for troubled kids which Sandusky founded in 1977.
Eight victims of abuse were listed in the grand jury presentment which documented allegations against the former defensive coach. Prosecutors charge Sandusky's repeated abuse of young boys dates back 15 years, and that he met his victims via The Second Mile.

Three separate, far-reaching investigations are underway into the child abuse scandal - and a university response has already cost four top officials their jobs, including the school's legendary coach Joe Paterno.
On CBS' "The Early Show" this morning, Penn State president Rodney Erickson said other victims may come forward. "That's entirely possible. I'm not aware of any at this point but certainly possible," he said.

Another revelation Monday was that the judge who set a reduced bail for Sandusky after he was arrested earlier this month was a volunteer and donor for The Second Mile.
District Judge Leslie Dutchcot, who released Sandusky on $100,000 bail - far less than the $500,000 requested by prosecutors - names The Second Mile as one of the organizations for which she volunteers, according to her attorney profile on the website of her firm, Goodall & Yurchak.

Rev. Al Sharpton Memorializes Mrs. Rosa Parks

The well known yet sometimes criticized Rev. Al Sharpton got up and made a beautiful straightforward speech about the "Mother of Civl Rights," as we call her Mrs. Rosa Parks. After boycotting buses, organizing protest, and much more she was laid to rest with the upmost respect from people all around the world. Not only did Rev. Sharpton speak on Mrs. Parks life he talked about how unjust and prejudice America could be and still are. He brouight to light that just because times and technology have changes, we still are treated unfairly in many situations because of race. Jim Crows laws have been out of sight for many years but the son " James Crow Esquire Jr" is still around in plain view. He talks about how so many things that our Black leaders fought for we take for granted and a joke. Technology and some interaction has made a lot of us blind to the fact that we are still controlled, belittled, and looked down upon by many politics and big names. I fully understand where Rev. Sharpton is coming from though I was not born in this generation, I appreciate everything I have and will learn. I will continue to help fight for not Only African Americans but woman as a whole.

Ellen DeGeneres is officially working for the U.S. government. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that the talk show host has been enlisted to help spread awareness about AIDS.
“I couldn’t be more honored to be named the Special Envoy for Global #AIDS Awareness by #SecClinton,” DeGeneres writes on Twitter. “Together, we can see the #EndofAIDS.”
Clinton says DeGeneres will "bring her sharp wit and big heart, and her impressive TV audience and 8 million followers on Twitter" in support of U.S. efforts to save lives and prevent the spread of the disease, according to The Huffington Post.
“I agree w/this quote from #SecClinton,” DeGeneres tweets. “ ‘An AIDS-free generation would be one of the greatest gifts we could give to our collective future.’ ”
The appointment was announced by the Obama Administration along with $60 million of additional funding to fight the spread of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. The money will go toward stepping up prevention efforts in that country, which Clinton says has already showed lowered cases of infection and allows for more treatment for those living with AIDS.

Amber Cole: the Regrets, Humiliation, and Bullying
C. McDowell
Com 236
As a journalist who enjoys reporting about beautiful models and fascinating women all over the world, I am deeply saddened by the latest events surrounding Amber Cole.
Amber Cole is a 14-year old female student who was videotaped on school grounds performing a sexual act with a male student. According to reports, she wasn’t forced to engage in this act and was comfortable enough to perform the act in the midst of other male students.
However, I’m almost 100% certain she didn’t give consent to whoever released this video and made her an object of ridicule on Twitter and other social networking sites. I know, most videos released to YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook are released without consent, but there’s comes a point when we have to distinguish between right and wrong.
And this is dead wrong.
We could go on and on about how Amber Cole was a consenting participant, but similar to cases of statutory rape, minors can’t consent because they don’t have the maturity or mental aptitude to realize how physically and mentally detrimental such acts can be.
What Amber Cole consented to was a desperate act she thought would win back her ex-boyfriend, who also happened to be her first love. This was an emotionally starved, emotionally lost young lady whose self-esteem had been so severely damaged that she thought this was the only way for her to win back someone she loved.
Don’t you see the tragedy in that?
What she didn’t consent to was being humiliated, ridiculed, and degraded on a worldwide stage.
Yes, Amber Cole made a horrible decision and will have to live with that decision for the rest of her life.
Yes, there should have been better supervision on school property.
Yes, there are clearly issues regarding parental upbringing.
But this video clearly shows a young lady crying out for love. It’s a shame that she allowed herself to succumb to that level of self-degradation, but we’re talking about a 14-year old girl desperately in love. A young lady still trying to find her way in life while growing up in a generation that occasionally blurs success and financial stability with tell-all books from Karrine “Super-Head” Steffans and sex-tapes leaked by Kim Kardashian.
America, please stop watching the video. It’s useless, humiliating, and degrading.
Stop ridiculing Amber Cole.
Love and mentor this young lady so she can grow up to be a beautiful woman who radiates with self-confidence, beams with self-esteem, and can love while being loved.

All i want to know is what is the DEAL with Casy Anthony being not guilty??? I msean all the evidence was clearly shown that she had something to do with the murder of that innocent baby. It was shown how much of a liar her and her mother was. Her mother even tried to lie for her so I feel like she should have been charged with perjury. How could you have not known that your baby was missing yet you have all kinds of recent wild club photoes.I feel like the jury should have been hung. I sat there and watched the trial and a movie about the trial. I was and am still convinced that she is guilty.

Mumia Abu-Jamal: Taken off Death Row???!! Yayyy

(blackmediaSCOOP) Today the Supreme Court cleared the way for deathrow inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal to get a new sentencing hearing for the killing of a Philadelphia Police Officer more than 30 years ago.
After Faulkner stopped a car driven by Abu-Jamal’s younger brother, Abu-Jamal pulled a gun, shot the officer and sat on the curb until he was arrested by other police arriving on the scene. A year later he was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to die.
His guilt is no longer at issue, since a series of lower courts have upheld his conviction. But a federal judge and the U.S. court of appeals in Philadelphia set aside his death sentence because of a flaw in the jury instructions.
The judges claim that jurors may have thought they could not give leniency to Abu-Jamal unless they agreed unanimously on a particular “mitigating circumstance.” The Supreme Court had ruled in 1988 that jurors may give leniency based on any mitigating factor, and they need not agree unanimously on the same factor.
The jurors in Abu-Jamal’s case decided that killing a police officer was an “aggravating circumstance” that warranted a death sentence. But a federal judge and the federal appeals court ruled that the death sentence in this case violated the Constitution because of the flawed jury instructions.
Prosecutors remain free to convene a new jury to decide on his punishment.
What are your thoughts on this case?
